I'm not getting into a car with no driver, period. So forget autonomous taxis...

I'm guessing there a few years worth of legal and insurance issues to sort out...
Right now, they can make your new car stop before it hits whatever is directly in front of you. It can also warn you about what's happening nearby. But they don't have the car making any avoidance movements. They could, but they don't. They leave that to you.
Because what happens if it avoids hitting something big (like 2 big kids on bicycles darting in front of you when it's too late) but then accidentally hits something little. Like a little kid sitting on the ground. Then what?
Since we don't want that little kid to get run over, should the auto-car that *could* have avoided the 2 big kids on bicycles not done so? Should it just do whatever braking it can do before it flattens them... *rather* than steering around them?
When it's a regular person driving, you can't sue about this kinda stuff. But when a computer program is making decisions based on whatever priorities were programmed in to it, well, that's a horse of a different color...
And so it begins.... (first part of video only...) http://bcove.me/mv7mkt4y

About the Tesla Model X crossover... who here gets Consumer Reports? Evidently, they said it's a disappointment....

Tesla produced just 260 of its Model 3 sedans in the third quarter, widely missing its target for the much-anticipated new car, because of production bottlenecks.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in August that the company planned to produce 1,500 Model 3 cars in September alone and ramp up to 20,000 cars per month in December.

Worthwhile Model 3 production numbers are like Khaleesi coming to Westeros. She'll get there eventually, but there's a lot of crap to sort through before it actually happens.
Still thinking about making it my next car. The lower maintenance costs and the fact that you don't have to pay for gas are very appealing, although it will make any trip longer than 100 miles an engineering problem.

It's not like the Tesla 3 is the only choice, or even the main choice, for getting the aspects that you cite as being appealing...
There will be an ever-increasing number of viable choices... manufactured by companies who actually know how to mass-produce cars, something which Tesla are now trying to figure out how to do...

Tesla roadster planned for 2020... featuring completely insane performance:

Plus a semi tractor... claimed to have a 500 mile range:

Both:

Of course, Tesla planned for the Model 3 to be rolling off an actual assembly line by now... but they're still banging out parts by hand, so...
(Mass producing cars is way, way harder than the tech industry realizes... it involves a whole different level of physical complexity and coordination... plus, once you make them, they have to actually work...)

Since the pace of Tesla production is so slow, you'd think they'd have lots of time to ensure that the few they do produce are done right....
Apparently not...
http://autoweek.com/...quality-control
^^^
That's how GM did quality control back when their quality was at their very worst.... they'd send cars to dealers with a bag of parts in the trunk for the dealer to swap out for the bad ones on the car... now Tesla appears to be doing about the same thing...
