No get it right. There is never ever a reason not to get it right.

Sure there is.  If it slows the game down the point that people are no longer interested in watching and stop paying attention, it's an issue.  I don't think we're there quite yet with any sport, but there's no question people are turned off by the delays.

Then stop watching. If you'd rather have rigged entertainment go watch WWE. Integrity is everything.

I'd prioritize getting it right over doing it quickly.  The delays don't bother me, and appeasing people who can't bear the interminable waits is less important to me than being as certain as possible that you've seen all the angles and the call is being made correctly.

There are things I'd change about the current system, and I think several of those changes would have the added benefit of speeding things up overall, but that wouldn't be my primary objective.

They get it right more often with replay, but they don't bat 1000% there either.

Glenn is right, there are plenty of people turned off by the delays in all sports brought by replay.

Do I want the calls to be right? Sure... do it quicker, and at-least in the times you are supposed to get it done.

Thats not to say that I wouldn't like to see things move faster. Bottom line is to get it right.

True, but not attempting to get it right is inexcusable under any circumstances.

Ehh, there should be a limit and/or strict parameters (i.e late in game etc.) and less of this umpire discretion BS. Reach your limit (or not within well defined parameters) then tough shit. Call stands. So, yeah, not attempting to get every call right is excusable imo.

Being right never seemed to be a priority of yours before now?  What's changed?   ;-)

Baseball is only long if you don't enjoy baseball. I don't see how it is any longer with the replay, versus previous years where the manager coming out of the dugout and pleading with the umpire for about as long a replay takes.

It's not a huge deal. Without replay, Turner is safe on both steal attempts, changes the complexity of the game, maybe he scores eventually on those. Gausman doesn't make it through six innings as it's two outs he didn't get, his pitch count reaches 100 and some in the 5th and not the 6th. Maybe the O's lose.

Maybe the time it takes for the O's to record two extra outs might be same 8 minutes it took the Umps to get those two calls right. Maybe there is a mid-inning pitching change for Gausman since his pitch count becomes further elevated, and those take 3 or 4 more minutes.  It all evens out. I actually don't think there is any correlation between replay making games longer. In theory yeah, if you stop games to make a call right it can take longer. But the alternative last night was the O's would've needed to record 29 outs instead of 27. Which takes longer then?

We're talking about a few minutes with replay. Who cares. Get the calls right. We're talking about minutes, or asking a pitcher to work two seconds faster to shave a few minutes off the game. It's minutes. You leave the park at 10:12 instead of 10pm some nights. Oh my god!

Here's one solution to shorten the games. When pitcher comes in from the bullpen in the middle of an inning, they take the mound and play resumes immediately. The reliever was just warming up. He has to warm up again when he enters the game? Give the new pitcher 1 minute starting from the time the manager takes the ball from the exiting pitcher, to deliver a pitch to the batter. You were just warming up for 10 minutes, lets go. No commercials for mid inning pitching changes. Read us his stats as he enters. You could probably shorten some games by 20 minutes this way.

If last night was a close game, we may have very well lost without replay. Replay for us last night eliminated two Gnats runners in scoring position, and helped us score a run. I agree with Branden, get the call right. But some serious changes are needed. Mackus - what are your thoughts on improving replay and why wouldn't improving replay efficiency be a primary goal?

I'd get rid of the challenge system, in all sports.  Some impartial official signals down when a call on the field needs to be reviewed, it goes to the team of umps in New York to review it, then they relay the decision to the field umps.  No waiting game with the manager at the top step looking down the tunnel to his review guy.  We lose 30 seconds playing the waiting game several times more often than a call is actually reviewed.

I think I enjoy baseball...  I know my Dad does.  Mainly, I hear my Dad's voice in my head when I complain about replay. He hates it.

As far as the calls last night, they were big.  But just Sunday there were two calls that went against the O's despite the video evidence being fairly clear in favor of the O's.

Ultimately, my primary issues would be eliminated with Mackus' suggestion above.

I get that it upsets the flow of the game. I get it should be more efficient then what they curently do. Baseball is far more efficient than football though. In the cases where they clearly blow the call, with the replay assist, there needs to be accountability then. But baseball doesn't do that. Football doesn't do that. Football won't even make their refs full time employees and train them in offseasons. Harbaugh wants them at camps so they can get the practice in too. Referees want to do more to be the best they can, and the NFL doesn't want them to. So the substandard officiating in the NFL is a product of the leagues greedy nature.

But I don't agree that it makes the games too long. Or too long to the point where getting it right isn't worth the time.

Anyone ever say, "I loved that movie, but if it was 6 minutes shorter it would have been better."

I just don't like the nonsensical way how a manager can ask for a crew chief review and not have it count against their challenge.

Lot of minor things that need to be fixed that would help it out tremendously.

It's like the umps are afraid to not accommodate the mgr... either get rid of the challenge limit or else start telling them "nope"...
