After getting the first 2 outs of the 4th, Ayala allowed back-to-back doubles. In the 5th, he allowed the HR to Cabrera.

In the Game thread, Ricker Says pointed out:

"Entering tonight, since June 20th and over his last 7 appearances, Luis Ayala has pitched 9 innings to the tune of a 5.00 ERA and given up 2 home runs. Rough stretch. That's 10 innings/6 ER's after tonight."

Ayala has definitely been poor of late, hopefully he turns it around soon. Until he does, he needs to be used less in 7th/8th inning situations and more in situations like tonight (wash-up/long-relief, etc.).

Makes sense I guess. To replace him would likely have cost more.

Ayala had a 1.10 G/F ratio in '11, and 1.01 in '12. .708 OPS against in '11, .717 OPS against (.683 vs RH) in '12. Pretty comparable back-to-back seasons. I'm glad to have him back.

That's a gimme. For that price you have to exercise it. You can still release him if you have to.

We all knew it was coming, but the O's officially exercised Ayala's $1M, no-brainer option.

For a guy that many of us were upset Duke was signing, he turned out to be really good last year and would be as good of an option as is be available for $1M or less in free agency. Hopefully he can have another good season, though ideally he'll only be our 4th or 5th best arm out of the pen.

Ayala was cut by the Nats and according to Rosenthal, the O's and another club have offered him a deal. Decision expected tomorrow.

I'm hoping this one goes through. He was an impact on and off the field for the team a couple of years ago.

RPs are such a fickle bunch with crazy inconsistency from year to year.  So, you just can't have enough of these guys.  Bring him in cheap, add depth to the bullpen, and hope for the best.

The Orioles are nearing a deal with reliever Luis Ayala, CBS Sports' Jon Heyman tweets. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal mentioned last night (also on Twitter) that Ayala had offers from the Orioles and another team, and that he could make a decision today.

Nothing wrong with signing Luis Ayala to a minor league contract. The Orioles know him, and Dave Wallace and Dom Chiti got a good look at him in Atlanta last year...Go O's!!!

I liked Ayala when he pitched for us previously.  He was solid.  Not the MOST RELIABLE, but I was never fearful when we brought him in like I am a Patton or Hunter (at times)...I really think we should give Stevie Johnson a real shot of making the club as a long man though...

Done deal according to Heyman. Can't figure out how to copy the tweet from my phone.
