It was a code of conduct violation, so more serious than simply a rules violation. No word on what caused it, other than he did something dumb. The vibe I get is that it won't be season-long, but it could be a few more weeks. Even so, he'd probably be better off simply redshirting. It'd take a lot for him to unseat some of the guys already making an impact on defense and special teams.

Seeing as there is no public record of any incident, it would appear he's not in any legal hot water. I suppose there could still be an ongoing investigation into something. If it were serious enough to warrant his dismissal from either the program or school, I'd think that would have already happened.

Sounds like he's back with the team. Posted a photo on Instagram yesterday, lots of "glad you're back" comments. Probably still redshirts this season with Denzel Conyers becoming more and more involved and both starting safeties playing so well.

That's a big loss. Darnell Savage, Jr. and Qwuantrezz Knight will return for next season, but behind them there are a lot of unproven players. He would have likely started opposite Savage in 2018.

AL.com: Behind closed doors, good coaching candidates can fall flat in interview process
Put this here because there is an emphasis on MD's 2010 search as it pertains to a couple of their candidates. It confirms what I was told about Gus Malzahn, that he was not considered because he would only come to MD for an interview if he was promised the job first. I never heard, and this doesn't say, why he took that approach....but it's worth noting that he was preparing to coach Auburn in the BCS Championship game at the time (as the OC), so maybe that had an impact because he only wanted the distraction if the job was his.
As for Mike Leach, he may have been closer to getting the job than some think. But he flat out blew it in the interview. I can see why that would give those hiring hesitation, but as we saw here a good interview is far from the end-all-be-all.
But this might put to rest some of the rumors that there were forces outside of UM that tried to squash Leach's hiring (namely ACC/ESPN).

Just a fantastic job by search committee there. Even if you grant them that Leach had a poor interview.... it should have been clear he was the more dynamic option.
Haven't ever seen Edsall profiled on 60 Minutes.
So frustrating.

I personally hired people in a previous job I held for almost a decade. Interviews mattered, because you usually would get a good sense of whether you could have a good rapport with the person. But it was the resume and qualifications that really mattered....come up short there and you don't even get an interview. And the more high-profile the job, the more emphasis I put on qualifications vs a good interview.
Edsall struck me as a guy who could talk his way through a great interview. He's a straight arrow, clean cut, and can tell prospective bosses just what they want to hear as leaders of an academic institution. Leach is obviously the polar opposite. He runs a clean program and graduates players, but in every other way he probably comes across as abrasive and someone who will be a thorn in your side as an administrator. But when it comes to comparing Edsall and Leach as coaches, and getting the most out of a program, their records speak for themselves.
For what it's worth, as much as I still lament those five lost seasons, I'm still not that upset they didn't hire Leach. I just don't think he's the right fit for MD.

Sounds like we might have our explanation as to what happened here. I originally suspected something like that, but when it never appeared in the police blotter I figured it was academic-related. Guess there was never enough evidence for charges.
Oh, and like a fish, the UM athletic department rots from the head.
