I guess in hindsight it's a good thing, but that OOC schedule for this season is a joke. If nothing else I hope Durkin encourages KA to schedule some more interesting opponents. Edsall sure had an aversion to playing brand name schools (I'm pretty certain the TX games were scheduled while Friedgen was still there).

It's pretty uninspiring, but take a look at the opponents. Edsall and his staff put a priority on recruiting the state of Florida. Two of their three non-conference games are against Florida teams IN FLORIDA. That does a lot for recruiting down there.

I really wish they'd re-vamp the "Crab Bowl". Maryland vs. Navy. I know coaches hate playing the triple-option and it does nothing for out-of-state recruiting, but especially with Navy being so good now, it'd be a huge local matchup. Kick it off at M&T, then do a home-and-home.

I'm guessing that part of the reason this schedule is weak has to do with the juggling they did when the Big Ten went to the 9-game conference schedule.

The Navy game would be fun maybe once every 5 years, although with them being in the AAC and keeping their rivalries with Army, Air Force and Notre Dame the opportunities to play them in the future will be very few and far between. Best chance might be to hope to draw them in a bowl game.

I'd just really like to see them play some schools outside the region, teams they seldom or have never faced. That Cal series was nice. I'd be all over it if they'd play at either of the Oregon or Washington schools. Of course it's also harder right now to get home-and-homes with Power 5 schools, everyone seems to prefer the 1-time neutral sites, but that could change if programs prioritize tougher schedules for playoff consideration.

EDIT: Maybe London can convince his new bosses to upgrade the schedule....UVA has recently played or will play USC, UCLA, Oregon, BYU and Stanford. Just don't follow London's lead down there when it comes time to play those games.

Unless this is Cam Newton and Co. they're talking about and just got the name wrong, then it's just another uninspiring set of games in what is apparently a policy to play the most boring and weakest non-conference schedule possible. Has MD scheduled one Power 5 OOC opponent since Kevin Anderson came aboard? I'm certain the Texas games were scheduled when Yow/Friedgen were there, and I think the 2020-21 games against WVU were too (they were supposed to be played sooner but were pushed back when the B1G went to a 9-game schedule). If you want sell more tickets, start scheduling some interesting opponents. Win or lose you'll fill more seats with an SEC or Pac-12 team than you will with the likes of Charlotte.

And going there as well...  which I guess potentially has some recruiting value, but that's probably overblown.

I have no idea how much of a role their upcoming games in Florida played in getting 6 recruits from there just now, but I agree it's probably more than people tend to think. I do think it's important for the Power 5 programs to play games against the other FBS schools, as it is probably essential for their viability. And I'm glad the Big Ten is doing away with the FCS games. But play at least one quality opponent out of your 3 non-conference games. As much as it looks like a good thing right now in hindsight, this year's OOC schedule is a joke and whoever made it should be ashamed.

Hokies, Terps announce future four-game series

2026 (CP), 2027 (Blacksburg), 2028 (CP), 2029 (Blacksburg).

“Virginia Tech fans should be excited about the Hokies returning to the capital region for two more future games,” VT athletic director Whit Babcock said. “The opportunity to get a four-game series against a Big Ten Conference opponent was certainly appealing. Even more importantly, we were eager to renew a historic series against a regional foe in a market where we have a very strong alumni base."

They'll be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Orange Bowl appearance.

It'll still look like this in 2026, only with a lot more dust.

InsideMDSports: Maryland Football Scheduled to Play at Yankee Stadium

Nov 4, 2017. Not a completely done deal yet, as the contract was negotiated by Rutgers' previous AD and hasn't yet been signed. But I'd guess since the new AD and football HC were recently invited to Yankee Stadium to throw out the first pitch, it'll happen.

As per Maryland's Twitter account, the program has just agreed to a home-and-home with Virginia in 2023 and 2024.

It's going to be a blast to rationally hate UVA again.
