Did Nickle post in this thread tonight?

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

"Now OPS sucks.  Got it."

"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."

"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

Great, solid win. Not much more to say than that. Hopefully they can build off of this performance and have another strong showing on Saturday night against Cleveland State before heading down to Chapel Hill next week.

Testudo Times: Rhode Island coach reportedly makes 'derogatory expletive' remarks to Maryland players during handshakes

http://www.testudoti...tive-remarks-to

Hope he gets his ass suspended. The whole thing was completely uncalled for. If you don't want the opposing coach putting his walk-ons in, maybe coach your team better so you aren't losing by 20+ points. Until then, take your loss and shove it.

Yeah it was obvious from TV. Carter in particular was ignoring him and keeping one of the assistant's away from Hurley. Great leadership. This team has good kids.

Really nice performance. Glad they were able to put a nice night together without having to get stung with a loss while they ate figuring it out.

The Terps overachieved last year. No way they were any better than a #3 seed under any other coach. Once Melo got hurt in the WVA we were done. Not like Gary got any team past the Rd of 32 his last 10 years anyway. That said, it's definitely on Turge to get the most out of this team this year. I'm not  sure thats a Top 5 team anymore. There are real flaws, but no excuse not to be Top 15-20.

Agree with this although I do think they are closer to a Top 5 team than a top 15-20 team. I've seen some positive signs with Turgeon. He played a real slow, half-court grinding style at Texas A&M but he's adjusted to his talent here at MD which I think is the sign of a good coach. It's why I respect Belichick so much in the NFL - he doesn't have a system, he just does what needs to be done to win games.

So I'm not necessarily convinced that Turgeon is or isn't a great or horrible X's and O's coach. I don't think he's proven much yet. His first year was basically a throw away. Last year was as good as Year 3 was awful. Year 2 was whatever. So we'll see what this year brings.

I will say that you have to realize that Turgeon is responsible for the high expectations as well. So as much as if this team goes 24-9 and gets knocked out in the Sweet 16 to an inferior team is on him for the coaching, with some other coaches we wouldn't have those expectations. I love Gary for what he did at MD and he's one of my favorite coaches of all time but the reason he always exceeded expectations is because he never recruited well enough to really have expectations. That's not acceptable anymore at MD and shouldn't have been acceptable the 2nd half of his tenure but they couldn't fire him.

Absolutely. Agree with everything you say here. I was positive Turge could bring in the recruits and get the buzz back. He always had a pretty good reputation as an Xs and Os guy. There have been some strange things at times but I certainly haven't made any conclusions there. This is all I've wanted from a MD team for a long time. One with realistic expectations to go far. I'm happy. Cerrano doesn't believe that, but I am. However, with increased expectations comes higher demands. There is a quality of play I expect to see. Obviously, it won't be there every night, but you know when the team has found "it".

I'm really pulling for Turg. He seems like a genuinely great person. I think he'll stay loyal to Maryland and win at least 1 NC here. I really think he proves himself a great coach.

I really like how he's taken the tradition of MD basketball and embraced it. Even in ways Gary never did (that I can recall anyway.)

Not much doubt in my mind that he will leave for Kansas whenever Self leaves if he establishes a level of consistent top 15 teams here at MD and makes at least one FF run. Not saying that means he's not loyal and that would be a good thing which means the program is in good shape, but just saying.

There's no reason to think Self won't be a lifer there though. And either way, that'd be a good problem to have. (IE: him being that highly regarded)... bring it on.

I saw the Md. coach jump in the line and Layman seemed to be trying to separate him from going after Hurley.  I really thought Hurley was agitated the whole game and thought he out thought himself with saving all his timeouts as the lead built.

Shame on him, that he took it out on the players.

I really did not think Turgeon did anything to show him up.  He wanted to get a few kids in the game.  Happens all the time.

USA Today: Rhode Island says coach Dan Hurley did not curse at Maryland players

http://www.usatoday....etive/76411670/

Not sure what their AD is smoking, but I think I'd like some. From what I heard, he called Maryland's players a nasty word that rhymes with "maggots", and that most of the arena could hear it.

But why get pissed at that timeout to begin with? Coaches always put the end of their bench in blowouts on either side of it, winning or losing. If that's what he truly was upset about then he's a total whack job.

Pretty funny seeing Melo smiling as he was holding back Turge. They seem to really like him, and he seems like a very likable guy. Here's to hoping he can actually coach with the big boys!

Why were you positive he could recruit at this level? I always thought he was looked at more as an X's and O's guy than a recruiter. Not saying he was looked at as a poor recruiter, I think we all expected he'd be better than Gary, but I can't say I expected him to consistently bring in 4 and 5 star players.

He's from the Larry Brown coaching tree and is very close to Brown - Brown is perhaps one of the best X's O's coaches in basketball history so I do think he will ultimately prove that he can coach. Time will tell I guess.

Because it's MD. So many resources at its disposal. Other than Stone, its not like he's got a mega recruit. When Melo commited he was top 50-60 before shooting up in the top 30 his final summer and Senior year. Most other guys have been top 75-80 guys. Consistently getting 4 star guys were absolutely attainable. I knew it was just going to take someone willing to put in the time and effort. It's only helped that Turge has seemingly embraced all of it.
