The players offer was weaker than what I thought it would be. I have a gut feeling that it gets done if Bettman can swallow his pride and let the players play in the 2014 Olympics. I still think that's a must for the NHLPA to sign off on anything.

Yeah same here. I mean they stuck a couple things in there, but I was surprised how many things they conceded on as well. I guess the players want to make a deal much more than the owners.

At this rate, maybe they should just shut down once every 4 years during every Olympic season.

The players are smart and they realize that the NHL is screwed if they have another lockout. That's another reason why I think it gets done. I have no faith in Bettman being intelligent enough to realize that, but I know the players will.

Hope so. Talked to a friend of mine last week and he said the players have the impression the owners are ready to lockout again and force another rollback on current contracts.

I saw a great article yesterday that said if you contracted 2 of the drains on the league and then moved 2 more, things would be much more stable.

I kind of agree. The warm weather experiment failed. Get PHX out of there, get at least one of the FLA teams out of there. A case can be made to separate the 3 NY/NJ teams, and get back into Canada more.

Yeah the players made a pretty legit offer than Bettman goes on spewing nonsense about their still being this huge gulf between the sides. It's almost like he's actively trying to make another lockout happen.

Scott Burnside wrote an article recently where he tore into some of the owners on this and called out a few by name including Leonsis.

He also called out the Minnestoa owner who had been complaining about the system despite the fact that he had just spent 200 million on two players!

That pretty much sums up why Gary Bettman is the worst commissioner in pro sports.

Move Phoenix to Kansas City or Wisconsin, move the Panthers to Canada, move the Islanders to Canada, problem solved. The Lightning are at least in the top 15 for attendance.

Yep, makes sense to me. I might even be on board for contracting two teams and spreading out some depth around the league. Haven't really thought about it a ton though.

Obviously yes. Tons of great leagues over there. The leagues are already basically preparing for it too haha. The KHL added a rule two years ago that says teams can add one NHL player and their salary won't count against the cap. Guarantee you that will be adjusted if there's a lockout.

Players could play in the AHL too. But that would be a pretty limited amount of players.

From bad to worse...

So after not negotiating for a week and then canceling Wednesday's session they talk for a whopping 90 minutes on Thursday. I guess there's still time to bang something out but at this point I'm expecting a Lockout to happen. Have I mentioned how much I dislike Gary Bettman!

This sucks so much. The league has to do stuff to close some of the ridiculous loopholes out there right now for the players, but to take it as far as a lock out is just absolutely insane.

BTW, could someone more knowledgeable than me on this issue (meaning, pretty much anyone) speak to what the biggest issue or two will be that will make or break this CBA?

It's mostly about the money, or more specificly splitting up the revenue that the league brings in, it's alot like the NFL's lockout only the pile of money is much smaller. The owners think the players get to much of the money and they are trying to change that. Don't get me wrong there are other issues where the league and players disagree on but if they can get past the money it shouldn't be too difficult to get a deal done.

http://espn.go.com/n... ... kout-looms

The owners actually submitted a new offer to the players and while I doubt the players will accept it, it is an improvement on their original offer. The new offer calls for a decrease in the players revenue from the current level of 57 percent down to 50 percent by year 4 of a proposed 6 year deal. This is definitely a more legitimate offer than the absurd 43 percent level the owners had originally asked the players to take.

The union hasn't responded to the deal yet, but is expected to do so today. Talks are also supposed to continue for the rest of the week, so at least they're still talking.

Today will pretty much tell us if there is going to be a lockout or not. There are a ton of crazy demands the league made, if the players cave on a bunch of them today, a deal will get done. If it's just some minor changes, it's not going to happen.

It seems like the league is TRYING to force a lockout.

Well Bettman and Daly met with the Fehr's on Friday, it's not much but it's better than nothing. Sounds like they might give it another go with some formal talks this week. Whether a deal can be reached or not remains to be seen.

Don't think it's a good sign, NHL/Union agree that players with 2 way contracts can be sent to the minors and not be subject to re-entry waivers when they come back.

You might see it as a small check mark on a list that need solved this week, but I look at it as a precursor to a lockout, knowing that all 2 way players will be sent to the minors instead of being free to play overseas.

Union and the League have been meeting today. NHLPA made a new offer today and the league made a counter proposal. No word yet if they've bridged the gap at all, but at least they're talking.
