It really shouldn't be an option. He's gonna choke again. And I know I've harped on this often but it's not like Cundiff has ever really been a good kicker. 2010 was the fluke year. Last year he was 75.7% which was near the bottom of the league for regular kickers. Only once in his career(2010) has he been an 80% kicker for a season. 1 time!!!. Last year Ryan Succop was 80% on the nose and he was 21st in the league in %. I mean this guy is clearly, clearly a below league average kicker. He was 10/10 inside of 30 yards (ugh.....except for of course the AFC Championship kick) a distance every NFL kicker is going to make 9/10 as long as there isn't bad snaps, blocked kicks, etc. He had the worst % from 50+ in the league at 1/6 and the x-factor that made him so valuable in 2010, his touchback ability, was negated a bit last year with the kickoffs being moved up. Not only that, but he finished behind 6 other regular kickers in touchbacks anyway.
Listen, this guy has never been an average kicker outside of 2010. He was out of the league for pretty much 4 years. This wasn't a good kicker who shanked a kick in a big game this was a below average kicker missing a kick in a big game. My tolerance would be much higher if it was a good kicker who Harbaugh was planning on bringing back after missing a kick like that. I could shake that off, but I have zero tolerance for Harbraugh bringing back this flat out bum to be our kicker again in '12. I mean we should have been looking to improve our kicker anyway, regardless of the missed kick, but the missed kick only made it that much more imperative.
BTW....It's obvious if they are only brining in a college kicker to battle him that it's not really going to be a competition. At least 2 years ago they brought Graham, an established vet, in to battle him.
