Cubs will certainly be an interesting team to watch.
There are so many interesting directions for them to go.
I know we're not allowed to try, but Kris Bryant has never been more available for less.
I wonder if a team like DC takes a swing with him.

I still like Almora. At-least some interest there, even with our our glut of OFs.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note
"Now OPS sucks. Got it."
"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."
"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

Again, this isn't an Oriole thing, it's a Myth that's been sold across MLB. There's a specific reason this has been done and you see it again here.
I think this is a terrible article by Matt Snyder. I think it's funny how so many writers and pundits in the media act like things are 'so difficult'. It's only difficult if you have no plan. You are where you are, you got there however you got there. You figure out your short term and longer term plan for winning and you can go do it. If you want to bury yourself in all of the options, then you buried yourself. Goodness, that's a self-inflicted wound, stop doing that.
1) 'Rebuilding' (contrary to popular belief) had little to do with the Cubs Championship.
2) The Winning cycle isn't why their farm system largely sucks now. The Cubs have done a poor job of acquiring and developing MiL Talent. The 'Winning Cycle' excuse has nothing to do why they haven't developed pitching internally or their system is generally thin.
3) The Cubs are a good example of the 'big market' trap discussed in the Snell trade thread. I've talked about them dealing guys like Happ and Schwarber for years to avoid the trap they find themselves in now.
4) I don't know what the Cubs will do (they don't check in with me), but if they decide to announce rebuilding, it will again be to buy some low pressure years for Hoyer and the new FO Team.
So I routinely consider what I'd do if I was in charge of any of the 30 teams. Let's not make this harder than it has to be.
Extend Rizzo (3/40)
Extend Baez (6/110)
Extend Contreras (4/52)
Trade Bryant (PHI, DC, LAD, NYM)
Sign Didi Gregorius (4/55)
Trade for Kiermaier and B Lowe (for Morel + 1)
That looks like
LF Happ
1B Rizzo
3B Baez
SS Gregorius
C Contreras
RF Heyward
2B Lowe
CF Kiermaier
P
Hendricks, Davies and Alzolay are 3/5 of the rotation, Kimbrel the closer.
That's 140-145M and you have to solve two spots in the rotation.
Easy enough to go the FA route and get some buy low candidates like Paxton and Kluber. Bring back Lester and trade for Jon Gray.
Orioles: If I'm the Cubs I'd go to the Orioles and offer a decent prospect or 2 and take all of Cobb's 30.5M owed + John Means. Not that I want to be in the business of helping John and Lou keep the team, but that's probably a deal that about 7 teams would take you up on.
Depending on some details in all of those deals, you're likely under 175M, very competitive in the NL Central and create some interesting 3+ year opportunity waiting to see what your more interesting prospects do.

Joc Pederson is in agreement on a one-year, $7 million deal with the Chicago Cubs
Basically replacing Schwarber with someone who plays incredibly similar to him

Except Pederson can play the OF (all 3 positions). Take the public metrics with a grain of salt, but he's been above average at-times, and also has over 3k career innings in CF.
Career wOBA's right in-line with each other though.

The Cubs have won the bidding war for Seiya Suzuki, who has all the tools to be MLB’s next international superstar.
On Wednesday, the 27-year-old outfielder agreed to a five-year, $85 million deal with Chicago, according to multiple reports. The Cubs will pay the Hiroshima Toyo Carp a $14.6 million posting fee, bringing their total commitment to just under $100 million.
A five-time All-Star in Nippon Professional Baseball, Suzuki is the latest highly coveted Japanese player to make a big-money transfer to MLB, following the likes of Shohei Ohtani ($20M posting fee), Ichiro ($13M), Daisuke Matsuzaka ($51M), Yu Darvish ($51M), and Masahiro Tanaka ($20M).
