This absolutely MUST be unveiled in time for football season!!!

9to5Google: Report: YouTube TV getting split screen mode

YouTube TV....is said to be getting a “Mosaic Mode” that “will allow subscribers to watch up to four live feeds at the same time by dividing the TV screen into quadrants.” This split screen mode will presumably also support two or three video configurations and sounds particularly ideal for watching simultaneous sporting events.

I cut the cord finally this week.

Got Verizon 5G internet and Hulu + Live tv, saving about $40/month from the cable/internet bundle here.

Hulu had everything I would watch without having to add extra packages. It has DVR, live sports, local channels, those are the reasons I kept cable. “Live sports” are like a 20 second delay from cable but I’ll live.

Yea, just can't check twitter until commercials lol.

I *think* the reason I went with YouTube and not Hulu was that Hulu didn't have MLB Network?  Either way, they had some sort of channel missing that was a non-starter for me.

Yeah, MLB Network was it for me, but at the end of the day, YT TV was more stable than Hulu Live when I was evaluating both a couple years ago. Interesting that Hulu Live has History Channel, and none of the other streaming services do (American Pickers is my jam: fight me!)

How is the 5G home internet going so far Randall? My 5G phone coverage when it turns on is typically mediocre.

No complaints. No interruptions. I’d say at most we have had two TVs steaming at once plus our phones, two laptops, some bougie baby stuff connected to WiFi (nightlight, crib cam). It holds up. Load times might be the same but there is no buffering. I’m not a tech guy so I don’t know how it would do for online gaming or streaming in 4K. But it’s been great so far.

There is zero chance I would move from cable internet to 5G (living in the city, that is).

To be fair, I’m in a suburb and the only cable company option we have (Spectrum) gave me a model cable box that back in Baltimore, Xfinity discontinued probably 10 years ago. If you clicked the guide button, the screen went black and the guide would load from top to bottom about as fast as website in 1995. Fast forward/rewind with any kind of accuracy, not even possible. Internet was probably okay cause streaming was never an issue. But you know with the cable company that if you drop cable but keep internet they jack up the price on that.

I havent made the jump yet. Heck, I still have my landline #.

Ive got comcast and we hammered the heck of it, during covid. my 4 grandkids was schooling at my house, between them being online and a few parents and grand parents, with multiple devices, phones and tablets at the same time. Never the slightest problem with slowness. I had upgraded to their X1 Infinity service, so I already had the fast wifi. The printer is wifi, did I mention nintendo switches and xbox during recess?

Well, with spring training started I need MLB network and, of course, greed prevails and it’s not on YouTube tv anymore. I plan on not “renewing” before next month when my bill is due. Directv stream is more expensive but seem to have everything (including MASN so I’d save on a VPN). Seems like they don’t have NFL network but oh well.

Thoughts?

Does DTV let you cancel anytime? You can temporarily shut off YTTV just for baseball season and turn it back on after the season (or when they get MLB network back). That way when you turn it back on all of your settings and anything you had DVR'd will still be there.

The cost difference between DTV and YTTV+MLB.tv is pretty much nothing, so for your the latter is only more expensive when you add in the VPN. I don't know much about the nuts and bolts of VPNs, but if you can't use it away from your home network, DTV might be the way to go since you'll get MASN and watch anywhere (and don't have to deal with their shitty app).

I don't know what DTV has in the way of split screen options, but with YTTV getting Sunday Ticket, they are promising they will have the ability to watch 4 split screens by football season. I don't really need it for NFL, but I will absolutely make use of that come college football season.

MLB tv I get for free with my Os tickets but that’s different from mlb network I think. Can I watch mlb network using my mlb tv subscription? I honestly don’t know

No, I'm pretty sure MLBN is separate. What do you watch on there? When I saw YT wasn't carrying it anymore, I just kind of shrugged. I get what I need just through mlbtv.com.

YouTube TV launches multi-view mode for NCAA Tournament (but only for some members)

No idea why YTTV has been slow-playing the rollout of something that has long been available on other services/apps. But, progress is progress.

Moving on to Directv Stream for baseball season. I know YouTube won’t miss my $70/month or whatever but good riddance until they get MLB network back.

Ironic you mention that, as this literally just landed in my inbox. You'd think for 8 extra bucks a month they can put MLBN back on (even though I almost never watched it).

Hi Mike,

We have an important update for our members. After nearly 3 years, we’re adjusting our monthly price from $64.99/month to $72.99/month. As content costs have risen and we continue to invest in the quality of our service, we are updating our price to keep bringing you the best possible service.

Your YouTube TV Base Plan membership price will change in your first billing cycle on or after April 18, 2023, and will be charged to your payment method on file going forward. To view your current plan, go to your Settings > Membership page for updated information. If you are currently on a Base Plan promotional price or a trial, that promotion is still honored and unchanged.

We will also be lowering the price of our 4K Plus add-on from $19.99/month to $9.99/month. Users new to 4K Plus are eligible for a $4.99/month for 12 months promotional offer.* For existing users, if you are on a promotional price below $10/month, you’ll enjoy that price until the promotional period is over, at which point you’ll automatically receive the new price of $9.99/month. If you’re currently paying above $9.99/month, your new price will be $9.99/month.

We hope YouTube TV continues to be your service of choice, but we also understand that some members may want to cancel their service. Family managers have the ability to cancel anytime here. For additional information, please visit our Help Center.

Sincerely,
The YouTube TV team

4K is a total rip. It’s borderline crap 75% of the broadcast. The few there are.

Hi Mike,

[...]

Sincerely,
The YouTube TV team

I got the same email earlier today. This is basically their response to the parent conglomerates that own all the cable channels. I mean, live TV absolutely sucks unless it's sports or I guess the weather. Nearly all the content I care to watch is developed by or for the streaming platforms.

After March Madness I'll pause my YouTube subscription (again) and either go without live TV, or I'll upgrade my Hulu (Disney/ESPN+) plan to include Hulu Live. It's decent, but not nearly as consistent as YouTube TV.

IMO, if Alphabet (Google) bundled YouTube TV and YouTube premium, they could get away with these rate hikes.
