This sounds like a very intriguing business idea. Not only could an affordable, small-footprint battery help those using solar energy to power their home, but even those on the grid could use it as a supplemental power source by charging during off-peak times (which is cheaper). And in the aftermath of an outage or disaster, this would be a better option than a home generator and the problems that come with it.

I'm excited about the potential of this, but skeptical we see this or anything like it catch on with the masses in the near future.

They'll need to cut the price a bit to get a lot of people interested, but that will happen over time. But I can easily see products like this becoming standard in new houses, and also power utilities looking at this as a way to even out the power usage and offering incentives.

At present, it's mainly a way to need juice from the grid only about 10%-20% of the time... assuming you get the right number of these things...

A new version of Tesla's rechargeable battery system, the Powerwall, is coming this summer.

The Powerwall can store solar energy and provide backup power for your home. The first version, unveiled in 2015, can fit either on the outside or inside the wall of your house. What improvements we will see in the updated version are unclear.

But for those interested in the technology, here's a breakdown of how the Powerwall works:

From AT&T in '93... after the breakup, but back when they were mainly just Long Lines and spent a ton on R&D at Bell Labs...

They had lots of ideas... and made them work....

Tesla discontinues 10-kWh Powerwall on the down low to focus on 7-kWh option

Regardless of the hype last year, the 10-kWh Powerwall will not make it to market after all. Perceptive eyes may have noticed that Tesla removed references to its higher-capacity residential battery from the Powerwall website and press kit, but last week the manufacturer officially confirmed discontinuing the product in an official statement to Greentech Media.

Tesla unveils its solar roof and Powerwall 2

At Universal Studios in Los Angeles Tesla CEO Elon Musk showed off the company's solar roof-top panels, new $5,500 Powerwall 2 high-capacity residential battery pack and Powerpack 2 for businesses.

Musk and company have been teasing the photovoltaic cell-embedded rooftop panels for a few weeks. The event was probably timed as an grand explanation for why its important the automaker acquire Solar City. Musk said that if the merger doesn't go through, the launch of the new tiles will be difficult.
