In the time between Davey and Buck which former O's manager would you want to see manage the team again?

 

I'm not saying they should, just a fun what if

If I absolutely had to? Dave Trembley. He was a bench coach for the Astros and director of player development for Atlatna after leaving here. Probably picked up some wise tips from some good teams along the way. 

 

Miller and Hargrove are too far gone. Mazzilli, nah. Perlozzo, Samuel, nah. Did I miss anyone?

Nooo... Where will he hear such genuine criticism of the team during broadcasts then?!

I don't know why I am assuming that Bordick would make a bad manager.  I guess it's from his uninspiring broadcasting, but he's actually very interesting to listen to when talking about the very narrow bandwidth of things he really understands (specifically the mechanics of playing defensive infield).  Its unfair of me to presume that the milquetoast Jim Hunter-esque guy who broadcasts the games is the same guy who would be in the manager's office (I do think it's fair to assume we'd see that guy in the press room, which would be obnoxious).  Maybe he'd be fine, if boring.  I have absolutely zero idea about his philosophies.

They have raved about him in ST, his instruction and teaching, etc...

 

I think its going to be important to drive fundamentals down these young players throats.  I think he can do that.

 

He was as fundamentally sound and intelligent player as you will find.

 

That doesn't mean he can manage but if they want to try it, I don't really have an issue with it.  

 

I didn't think Flanny would make a good GM based off of his announcing, what he would talk about he valued, etc...I don't feel that way about Bordick, even though he was as dry an announcer as Flanny.  I think what Flanny brought to the table would have been great if you handed him the reigns of pitching in the minors..let him implement his ideas.  Let him run it.

 

I kind of view Bordick the same way.  Wouldn't want him being the GM but a high profile coach or even manager?  Worth a try.

Though many in and out of the org. believe his failure to not use Britton in '16 Wild Card Game was the beginning of the end for him.

 

They have it wrong. It wasn't his failure to use Britton, it was...

 

1) Putting Jimenez on the playoff roster

 

2) Putting Jimenez in a tied game in a relief appearance when Hunter and Britton were on the bench.

I could see Bordy being a good manager.   May take awhile but who cares we are going to lose anyway.  Like Rob said, the new guy needs to be strong on fundamentals and insuring the game is played the right way.

 

I could see him being a lot like Buck.

 

I think JJ Hardy would bring the same qualities.

I haven't posted in a little bit, so anyway...

Thanks Buck for being part of the turnaround and of easily the best run of O's baseball of my adulthood.

However, this was the right move. I don't think it makes sense to keep a manager after a historically awful season. That's not to put all or most of the blame on him, or even a significant amount for that matter, but he has to bear some responsibility.

It was also the right move to let his contract run out rather than fire him to revisit that discussion.

My remarks on Duquette would be similar btw, although I could have seen more of a case for keeping him.

Buck tried his old favorite tricks of asking the umpires to check the opposing pitcher for "substance" on his uniform or person.

Hard to disagree with him to strongly for doing that, IMO. Did you see Musgrove? Looked like his ears were glistening. Buck alluded after the game that the spin rates were way up as well. I didn't see it live, but the pictures of Musgrove are pretty bizarre. Maybe it was just an attempted psych out but feels like justified concern to me.

Certainly looks bad when you're wrong, but better to look bad than to let someone get away with that in an elimination game.

I watched the game, and his ears were noticeably glistening, like the rest of his face. But he wasn't going to them before throwing pitches. IMO, it was Buck going to his bag of tricks to try and break up his rhythm.

IU did not see the game but saw the highlights and it was noticeable.  Even if it was mind games, good for Buck.  The season was on the line, he was down 4-0, give it a shot, instead of going quietly into the night.
