Among players with at least 300 plate appearances, Pearce is 9th in wRC+. 9th!
What an out of nowhere year by Steve!
And that's even with 232 at bats against righties!

Pearce turns 32 in April. I think the move would have been to offer him a 3/15 type contract starting this year. I'd gamble that much on his age 32-34 seasons.

Sure, especially with less mileage than someone who was full time for his 20s. I think he'd be worth 1+ WAR/season for the next 3 years, and that contract is small enough to let the team bench him/relocate him on the field if a better player came along at his position.

I agree with your main point... although I'm not really sure about the mileage thing... he's had less in-game mileage, sure... but Buck was talking like he's been wearing out his wrists in the batting cage, so I dunno... I guess it depends on exactly what your odometer is measuring....

Makes sense to me.
p.s. Bill James says it's a waste to have your SB guy leading off... when you need SB's is in front of your 7-8-9 guys, not in front of your XB guys...

Eutaw Street Report: The case for Pearce as leadoff hitter
I vote yes.

I've been on the "Pearce for Leadoff" train since Nick signed with the Braves. Seems like the obvious choice to me. Unless Da Aza happens to rake and hits over 280 or so. De Aza takes some walks, he's not a complete hacker, but he typically doesn't have a high enough average. But if he's hitting, then he's an acceptable option up top, though I still prefer Pearce (assuming he's hitting as well).

Steve Pearce felt some tightness in his oblique today and the Orioles will slow him down. They were hoping that he could start an injury rehab assignment early next week.

So back next week?
Hopefully he hits well as soon as he gets back. We could use the boost in LF or DH.
