http://www.cnn.com/2...tude/index.html

A 7.8 magnitude quake hit near Kathmandu, Nepal. The death toll is already up to 2,000, and many historic sites have been destroyed. It also caused an avalanche on Mt. Everest, killing many in the base camp, including a Google executive.

This, along with the volcanic eruption in Chile. And the discovery that the Yellowstone supervolcano may be bigger than previously thought.

Earth is an amazing and horrifying place.

Had not seen the news on the Yellowstone supervolcano... which is scary, considering everything I've read about it previously.

I watched a few docs on My St Helens after reading that link. Then I heard that Yellowstone could potentially be something like 1000 ( or was it 10,000)times more powerful. Scary.

The downside to being an amateur science geek is that you hear about all of the truly fascinating ways our species could blip out of existence, be it planetary (supervolcano, plague, etc.) or space (meteor, gamma-ray burst, etc.) or even self-inflicted, without having the training to truly understand how minuscule the chances really are :P

This is one of my favorite disaster possibilities: http://en.wikipedia....nami_scenarios. Have fun the next time you go to OC or the Outer Banks :D

How the hell do I get ready?   Is this like the old Soviet nuke drills in school where I practice climbing under the desk?

You've got the right mindset, so that's good. Watch 2012 starting John Cusick. That should help.

If people are smart, like I am, they'd be buying up real estate on what will soon be Arizona Bay.
