I believe this has been discussed before, but since we just got back from Asheville, I must submit them as a contender. There's about 9 breweries clustered in and around downtown, all within easy walking distance. Some really good ones too with tremendous atmospheres and fun games to play.

Other contenders IMO include San Diego, Portland, Seattle, Denver, and Philly.

I don't know anymore.  I used to think it was Philly but I'm not so sure.  The Bay Area has RR, Lagunitas, Bear and a ton of others.  That's tough to match.  I find Pliny on tap pretty regularly.

Only SD can top that for me.  Ballast, Stone, Alpine, West Coast...I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

I love going to breweries, so for that, Philly isn't so good, and nor is SF or Oakland, at least if we're talking about staying within the city. But of course the selection at the bars and the distribution for the stores matters too.

Kelly and I made a list on the way back of the 10 bars/restaurants/breweries we'd want within a mile of where we live. I put 4 breweries from Asheville on that list. Just really cool places to hang out, have some really good beer (and food at a couple places), and play some games like cornhole, shuffleboard, giant jenga, etc. Really tempted to apply for jobs down there.

Note that we only included places we've been to together so that took California places among others out of the equation for me.

Frederick, MD (half kidding) -- Flying Dog, Barley & Hops, Brewer's Alley and Monocacy Brewing Co.

Not bad for a small city.

Glad you liked Asheville. I can't recommend it enough to people.

Bend, OR. Other than Deshcutes, I imagine most here probably haven't heard of many of the breweries there. But Boneyard, Cascade Lakes, Crux, 10 Barrel (although I've boycotted them since they sold out to A-B), Silver Moon and Worthy are all very good....and I'm sure I left a couple more out. And then there is my personal favorite, GoodLife. Their Comatose Double-IPA ranks right up there with Stone's EnjoyBy as tops on my beer list.

I'll have to check it out sometime. Been wanting to get back to the Pacific Northwest.

Great city for outdoor activities too, summer and winter.

I've been to Bend.  Its was a total hole.  I recall they had a bowling alley and 90% of all people had gnarly moustaches (women included).

That's why they brew so much beer there.

Just a point of distinction, but 10 Barrel is not brewed in Boise....they just have a pub there. It's brewed in Bend, which I've mentioned above.

If you do find yourself in Boise, it is a great town. I was most recently there last summer and stopped by Edge Brewing, which wasn't mentioned on Thrillist. Highly recommend the Obligatory Double IPA (the name fits).

Yeah Boise seems like a cool city. Maybe something like their version of Asheville.

Pretty good brew here in Austin. Anyone on the Untappd app? Finds beers and breweries near you. Your ratings of brews guide others.

I'm liking the Left Hand Milk Stout and any Bourbon barreled aged brew lately. Pecan Porter 512 and Thirtsy Goat are my go-to brews.
