“Interesting note on John Means: Not only was his fastball velocity tonight much higher than his 2019 average (95.2 mph vs. 91.7 mph per Statcast), but so was his changeup's (84.1 mph vs. 80.9 mph). Still about an 11 mph difference between the two pitches. #Orioles”
“If you're looking for more John Means bright spots out of tonight's outing: He generated nine swinging strikes among his 51 pitches tonight. At 17.6%, that was the third-highest rate of any start of his career. #Orioles”
“John Means' fastball average tonight: 95.2 mph
Mychal Givens' fastball average tonight: 94.7 mph
Hmm.”
“ John Means credited his increase in velocity to a tweak made while throwing into a mattress during quarantine.
"Hopefully, next time, I get some results with it." #Orioles”

If Means can throw 95 consistently with the changeup he worked last year, he can be a monster.

I remember a story from last year about his Dad being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Means to IL....

Left-hander John Means is headed back to Baltimore and the Orioles placed him on the injured list while he undergoes testing for COVID-19. The intake process must be done prior to rejoining the active roster.

This just seems precautionary to align with the protocols and leverage the roster spot.

It is, that's where there's a special IL designation with no days attached, it's for people that have to go through the testing protocol to get back to the team.
Saw it with someone else recently that went home for a kids' birth. Just has to get quarantined while waiting for negative test results and then they come off IL.

Yea, I know, I was more referencing the loss of his Dad.

I did not see him pitch yesterday, where was the velocity of the fast ball hitting?

8.10 ERA in his first six starts, 1.52 ERA in his last four starts. Quite the adjustment!

Phenomenal job adjusting and settling in. The adjustments seemed mostly psychological to me based on the things he's talked about.
Well he did have some start and stop. And just had a kid. And his dad just passed recently. He’s had a LOT going on this year.
