Check out these gifs of various windups/swings from old time HOF players (or at least mostly HOF, I didn't check them all):

I can't help but think that most of these guys would be completely pwned in today's league, at least the hitters.  It's harder to tell with the pitchers.

I mean, look at Ty Cobb's swing.  He doesn't even have his hands gripping the bat together.

Walter Johnson, check out that follow-through:

Mel Ott - how slow must that pitch be coming in to have time to get a leg kick like that?

Just goes to show, these guys were dominant in their day, but the game itself has changed so much.

I remember all three of those being featured in Ken Burns' Baseball, and trying them all out myself :P

I actually throw a lot like Walter Johnson--that sort-of slingshot almost-sidearm delivery. Doesn't hurt my elbow :P

And I love watching Ott. That leg kick is great.

Id say in today's game, Youkillis had a similar grip to Cobb, but a way different stance. Hands apart on the bat until entering the hitting zone. Bobby Bonilla also had a real high leg kick for a hitter.

I would also say from a form standpoint.... Stance, swing style, looks, Hunter Pence probably would fit in in the 1920s better than any other current player.

The difference is for any of the current players being named above of course is the competition they face as opposed to the HOF players. Today's game hasn't just changed it's played at a higher level.

I can't believe you look at these gif's and think those guys were inferior... that's just arrogant and dumb...

Ruth had some bat speed. Even more impressive with the size bat he swung. He must have been ridiculously strong.

First, I don't know why you would refer to my comments as "arrogant and dumb".   That's a shitty thing to say in a friendly environment like this, and you really should be ashamed of yourself.

Second, I think my point is fair.  These guys were dominant in their day, but the level of play has obviously progressed so much since then, and it's really mind-blowing.

First point:  You are absolutely correct.  I'm sorry for having done that.   I hope you will accept my apology.

Second point:  I think you're quite wrong about that.  I don't think Ty Cobb or Walter Johnson would be pwned.  I think they would adapt to today's game, just like they perfectly adapted to what the game was then.  I think each of them would teach us something surprising.  What they each did was not some now-obsolete fluke.

Apology accepted.

You're right, let me hone in on my point a little better.   There's no doubt that these guys would be able to be coached to play today's style game -- compact swing, no wasted motion, etc.     My point was regarding how they actually did play the game.   Felix Hernandez would have the ball in the catcher's mitt before Mel Ott finished that leg kick.   Walter Johnson would be completely ignored by MLB scouts if they saw that delivery today.
