Quote function isn't working for me for whatever reason.

But Rob, The fact that it CAN is enough for me to say that people like that have no business being teachers.

You could have mental anguish from almost anything in life.

I don't know what took the kid so long to attack that asshole.  The second a cymbal gets thrown at my head, it's on.

And no, this guy is a complete and total prick and I'd want nothing to do with him.  To say that needing to behave like that is the best way to get the most out of your students is completely barbaric.

I also don't see how anyone gets better from behavior like that from a coach.

I feel like people generally either have "it" or they don't. Sure you can coach someone up but if they don't have the talent or the drive to be great, then yelling at them, hitting them and throwing shit at them isn't going to make them better.

If anything, there's a greater chance you'd alienate the next great musician or athlete with behavior like that, rather than inspire them to be great. Especially teenagers and college kids who don't want to hear shit from their parents, teachers, anyone.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Just finished watching the movie. I get both sides, and obviously J.K. Simmons' character took it to the extreme, but I'm not sure I have a problem with anything specific that he did. Personally, I respond really well to tough love. The fear of embarrassment or anguish drives me to be better. Are there less violent methods of teaching? Sure. Are they as effective? Probably. It depends on the student. The teachers I've had who I have the most respect for now are the ones who called me out most when I screwed up. As a side note, they did a pretty solid job with the fake drumming in this movie. As a drummer, there were only a few spots where I could really tell it was off.
