So I moved this weekend to a less expensive place. As part of the move I need to switch my Comcast internet over. The lady on the phone told me I need to simply hook up my current modem here and activate it -- no need for a tech to come over.

The previous tenant here told me she had Fios and not Comcast and there appears to be cable outlets in various rooms. Do Fois and Comcast both use the same wiring? If she was using Fios will I be able to hook my Cmcast router up to that outlet and be good to go?

Yes, you should be fine. The cable infrastructure in your development uses different cables for the companies servicing your area. But the home only has the one set of wiring. The wiring that connects to the outside infrastructure connects to both and you receive juice from the one which you are using. That's my understanding of how it works.

Comcast sucks....just go to Verizon and then you have no worries.

I've never had an issue with their internet. Not a fan of their cable but I have Directv for that.

Comcast sucks....just go to Verizon and then you have no worries.

Verizon's all-in-one modem/router they make you use is horrendous... especially once you get to over about 7 or 8 devices using WiFi (which equates to about a room and a half these days).

Well, honestly, I've never pushed too hard on that... but my understanding is you have to use it. And of course, you still pay a $5 or $10/month fee for the modem/router. But I've had them out a ton over the years, and really it all comes down to the device not being able to handle more than 5-7 wireless devices. What I've done is wire a separate wireless router do my living room and connect those devices to that secondary router. That has worked, but it's pretty ridiculous to have to do that these days.

I might be wrong... but I think they can either (a) require you to use their modem *or* (b ) charge you a monthly fee for the modem, but I don't think they can do both... if they charge you for it, then I think they have to let you get your own and use it without a monthly fee...

Unless Verizon isn't available. That is the case at our current place, where we have Comcast, which enjoys an effective monopoly in town. FiOS was a good experience when we had it (except, eventually, for the price), but that isn't an option here.
