Was thinking about this after Silva got busted for steroids after his fight last weekend. I think its an extremely low number.

Now, I dont think you necessarily have a lot of guys who consistently take HGH or cycle on steroids or whatever. I absolutely believe that at times most of these higher level college, pro, olympic athletes have taken something illegal. I think there are probably a lot of Brian Roberts out there who just felt the need to take something at certain times. I dont necessarily think Roberts only tried roids once, but I also dont think he was doing it consistently year after year. Same goes for Silva as he was trying to come back from a long layoff at age 39. I don't doubt he fought a lot of his fights completely clean. I also doubt this was the first time he took steroids before a fight.

SO, how many of these high level, money making athletes have never touched anything illegal. I think its probably under 20% and I feel like Im being pretty conservative..

BTW....I know this will open up the discussion for some of you about making PEDs legal. Thats fine, but I really want to know how many you think have never cheated at all.

Yeah less than 20% for sure. It's all over high school teams these days too. Definitely very, very common.

People give the sportswriters a lot of shit about how they guess if so and so did steroids and all that.  But if a guy looks like he's on steroids, he's on steroids.  You really can't hide it.  That's not to say that guys who don't look like they're on steroids aren't on steroids, though.  The HGH is harder to tell which I imagine is why it's so popular, but it serves a different purpose.

There's too much money involved in pro sports.  There's a good chance you'll get away with it.  Those things make it a good risk.  Any of these guys coming back from serious injuries when they're north of 30 are taking HGH.  Of course I have no proof, but I'd be willing to bet a good amount of money Nolan Reimold is taking HGH right now.  He'd be an idiot not to.  He has a chance to make tens of millions of dollars over the next 8 or so years if he's healthy and produces.  The con to taking HGH is....well, I've never heard of a con.  It's a GD miracle drug for someone in their mid-30s or older or someone coming back from injury.  And the long term effects are zilch.

So anyone successful in sports who is in their mid-to-late 30s and anyone who came back from injury and was productive, I'd say the percentage is 100 percent of those guys took HGH.  But HGH shouldn't be lumped in with steroids.

It entirely depends on how wide a net you're throwing with PEDs.

If you only mean anabolic steroids and similar substances, I think overall the percentage is quite low. If you include HGH, and amphetamines, and those chemicals, I would go MUCH higher. Probably 75-80 percent who have used something at least once. Just steroids, maybe 15-20 percent tops.

I have no idea what this means...

I should have taken out the "you can't hide it" there. If you look at a guy and he looks like he's on steroids, he's on steroids. But there can also be a Brian Roberts.

If you go by that, well, Cal has looked like he's on steroids for quite a while now... but I don't think he is...

You mean towards the end of his playing career? He looks like he's on desserts now.

I think there are rare exceptions that anyone in any job, has reached the top of their profession without cutting a few corners. This is just the way athletes do it.

Based on things I've heard, very few baseball players have never tried them, especially in the previous generation.

Can't speak for the other sports however.

Studies show that increasing HGH levels with drugs predisposes people to heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

That's three years old and CNN is using their common scare tactic.   They single out a woman who already had cancer and then find a doctor who says "studies show...may..." with no link to the studies.  Here are some real side-effects: swelling, joint pain.  They go away when you get off it.

I think the percentage who haven't at least dabbled in PEDs is under 50. That's why I don't think it's a big deal, in competitive terms the playing field is pretty level.

I know a couple guys my age who played for different high-level D1 college baseball teams (some of their former teammates are in the majors now) and they both have at least tried steroids and said they were easily available and prevalently used on their teams.  Don't know about hGH.

Of course they were. I know lowish level HS and JUCO users.

Hell, I get roided up when I'm preparing for a big time debate on here with Weber.
