Roch - @masnRoch
Per @BrinkPG: Huntington said PTBNL would be "similar" to Tarpley

It might be Brault.

Less than a 50/50 proposition. Especially, if he were to be a fulltime RF and hit vs LHP.

He mashed against LHP in 2014.... we'll see what 2015 has in store.

If it's a PTBNL, it could be a 2014 draft pick FWIW

Dealing 2014 picks as PTBNLs seems to be the trendy thing for GMs to do lately.

Two recent Os bloggers doing analytics work for Pittsburgh. Not that they have spent time scouting the Os system, but wonder if they passed on names for the Pirates Scouting staff to review.

@masnRoch: Confirmed it's Stephen Tarpley and PTBNL for Travis Snider #orioles
Is the PTBNL a draft pick from 2014?

Could be Brault also?

"8:23pm: Pirates GM Neal Huntington tells reporters, including Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Twitter link), that the player to be named later will be “similar” to Tarpley. It seems worth noting, then, that Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reported earlier tonight that fellow Class-A left-hander Steven Brault was a possible name that could exchange hands."

Too many GBs and IFFB for Snider. Wonder if there is something in his swing that can be fixed?

This is the kind of deal I expected DDDD to do.  I'm not unhappy about it at all.

@jasoncollette: A critique on Snyder is inability to handle the good velo. When he's facing 94+, only Brayan Pena has lower OPS (min 250 PA) in recent years

So a rare situation where you might want to platoon him so he avoids higher velocity pitchers.

It isnt going to be as a regular vs LHP.

His splits arent crazy, but Nick is likely to be the better offensive player in '15. Especially, if we are talking about 500 ABs.

I'll go on record as prefering Peralta from Ari. Same age and Snider has done more in the MLs but bigger upside with Peralta IMO.

But what did it take to get him? Is the potential difference in production worth a bigger package, if the price was indeed higher?

Yeah, I don't know what it would have taken to get Peralta. Its tough to believe it would have been substantially more.

On Snider....

I'm kind of neutral on him.  He's had an OPS under .700 in the 3 years before 2014, but he was a decent PH last year (.754 OPS in 52 ABs) and had a hot second half....and he was a top draft pick and prospect for years to start, so there's projection to dream on.

Obviously don't know who the PTBNL is yet (maybe someone like David Hess (another '14 5th rd) or John Means ('14 11rd, LHP)....and you can always give up these guys to make the team better....hopefully Brault isn't in the deal

What I don't really get is why you are trading some interesting (at least) prospects for the Pirates 4/5th OFer.  The Pirates don't really need or want Snider and he's an ARB2 guy making 2+M....so they aren't going ARB3 with him anyway...

So Snider should come (roster wise) at the expense of Lough.....which means we should be getting something comparable to Tarply/whoever in a deal for Lough.  The Marlins were the best fit for Lough (he'd have had a good role there)....but we've waited long enough that they signed Ichiro.

If you keep Lough, then your bench includes Jospeh, Flaherty, Young and Lough.....so RF is most of your IF versatility (Davis, Pearce)....and Lough has almost no role.  A guy like Parades is out of the mix.

As always, you have to wait for the final moves....but it seems like an odd overpay for a guy like Snider.

Seems to me like a move that has DD's fingerprints all over it... he wants to make sure he gets production from at least one LH OF'er (or two)... but he's not gonna pay megabucks for one (or two)... so he makes sure he has a few of them on hand who have some promise, and then waits to see which one (or two) pays off...

Each of the three can give us what the current version of Nick likely would have... and any one (or two) of them just might do a lot better than that... we just don't know which one (or two) it will be... and neither does DD... which is why he's making sure that he has a few on board...

So what? DDDD is staying put, so he can go back to work now? What a joke.
