Putting GT that low is a mistake....probably due to writing off PJ as relying on a gimmick...

EDIT: either I've got brain rot or else he changed it.  When this was first posted, I swear I remember he had GT as #23... but now it's #18.  Which is still a mistake, given that this is the 1st time at GT that PJ has the QB he wants.

Re-EDIT:  my mistake, I was confusing the links in the 1st 2 posts, which have them #23 and #18 respectively.

The reasons for worse expectations given in ther #18 one includes that PJ lost a bunch of RB's and his WR's.  What the guy doesn't appreciate is that PJ doesn't need great RB's, he just needs a half-dozen OK RB's for the A-backs.  He does need a capable B-back, but most capable FB's will do.  As for WR, his O is designed to send WR's to the NFL, which is counter-intuitive to most folks, but it's still true.  What's more important than the losses is that PJ still has the QB he wants plus an O-line that is both experienced and good at doing what he needs them to do (which is to rely on specific technique instead of being big).  The main guy they're gonna miss is RG Shaq Mason.

Too bad for OSU that they can't trade some of them...

Taking nothing away from Jones' performance, but is the NFL so desperate for QBs that they would draft a guy in the early rounds who made all of 3 starts in college, during a season in which he began as the 3rd stringer? (Never mind, I know the answer)

Won't that put the games up against the NFL Wild Card round? Or will that be Week 17 on the NFL calendar?

According to Wikipedia, it would be Saturday of Week 17--the playoffs are scheduled to start the 9th.

OK. Well, that being the case Jan 2 makes a lot more sense than New Year's Eve. And it's not like ESPN hasn't already been calling the shots in college football for years.

A little late for them to realize this might be an issue...  what can ESPN bully them with?

For ESPN to win this one, I think the carrot would be the better approach than the stick. What that carrot is, I don't know exactly, but it would obviously involve money. Without looking at future calendars, I don't know how often this will really be an issue for the 12-year contract cycle with the current format. It is kind of a perfect storm....

- Year when the semifinals are the Dec 31 bowls, not Jan 1 bowls

- Jan 2 falls on a Saturday

- NFL is still in Week 17 the first weekend in Jan, and not Wild Card Round of the playoffs (when there would be 2 Saturday games)

Army-Navy date could be problematic

The College Football Playoff's management committee will discuss Navy's eligibility for this season's New Year's Six bowls because of the academy's new conference affiliation and the timing of its annual game against Army.

Navy will join the American Athletic Conference in the fall.

The commissioners' concern is if the Midshipmen are ranked high enough to earn one of the New Year's Six bowl bids -- and then lose the following week to Army. That loss would not count toward Navy's final ranking, penalizing other teams that would have earned a New Year's Six bowl bid if the loss was factored in.

The College Football Playoff final rankings are released on the Sunday following the first Saturday in December. They can't be moved back another week because it would delay the other 30-something bowl pairings, putting even greater hardship on fan bases traveling to the bowls.
