Walker was never a great profile hitter, but I've got some hope wrapped up between Schoop, Walker, Mancini, Yaz, Sisco and Reyes the O's seem to actually be developing some bats.

Of that group, Sisco was probably the highest profile of the bunch as a 2nd round pick.

I think Walker is going to turn into a bit of a tease but I think we're getting more out of the Calvin Pickering types right now than we did before, which speaks well of our system and potentially this incoming draft class which is loaded with hitting.

Probably not the thread for this but I wonder if that's the reason we went offense heavy in this draft...

Well, that's not really true.  He has never been looked at as a homer guy but a gap power guy with a good BA and OBP is possible...kind of an Overbay type guy.

Not a great profile for 1b.

A 24-year old season Overbay would be worth more than what Christian Walker is right now to me. And Overbay was ranked #63 by Baseball American in 2003...something Christian Walker hasn't sniffed. I'd say Walker's ceiling is Overbay's professional career. Where as I'd say Overbay's ceiling at the time of his call-up was at that point thought to be potentially be better than that, numbers did get inflated a bit by the PCL but they did translate when he finally got a shot. But that feels a little nit picky as I see your point about the general similarities of their profiles.

I don't care if he profiles like a traditional first baseman.

If he can be a 280/350/420-450 guy, thats fine.  We have a second baseman and OFer that are better offensively than most.  Joseph also appears to be a better offensive C than normal.

And, of course, Manny appears to be elite.

So, you can make up for the lack of homers.  If he can put up that line and play good enough defense, I would be very happy with that at a cheap price.

See, here I don't think you know what the hell you are talking about....   He has a 234 ops+ with a 500 slg and he is opsing 1.100+ how much more power do you want for cripes sake.

<p>I am pretty sure Shack is thinking of PBR.

Not making the comparison, but when he was in the minors, Votto looked more like a Lyle Overbay type as well. Don't get caught up profiling.

Would you be comfortable handing over first base to Walker next year?

I wouldn't mind giving him a shot at it and see what he could produce. But I would also be doing that knowing full well if he falls on his face, you need to make a deadline move or have a plan for the following year.

I.e. he's not a can't miss enough guy like Manny that you just let him play through until he figures it out, but I think he deserves a shot at extended playing time to give him a chance to produce. If he puts up some solid numbers, then you enjoy the savings you have and play him.

We are a team limited by finances, so sometimes you gotta do things like that. Just hopefully not too many of them at once so you can still compete.

Have to think he is a better offensive player than Schoop was last year...although the defense probably won't be as good.

Yeah, more like a solid but not all star level player. Nothing wrong with that, especially when its a spot to save money.

I think he's going to be one of those guys that produces wherever he plays, and knowing he's not bouncing up and down could really let him focus and do what he does best.

Recency is important, but we're talking about a 234 PA stretch where he had a 856 OPS (which is good especially in Norfolk).  But he still had that 677 OPS for the first 358 PAs of the season.  And a 763 OPS in 188 PAs at Norfolk in 2014.  His numbers on the season are pretty similar to guys like Urrutia and Alvarez and Clevenger.  Even his good numbers over the final stretch aren't much better than someone like Chris Parmalee.

If we lose Davis, Walker's gonna get a shot in ST.  But I can't say that I think he's someone who will prove capable of hitting at the MLB level well enough to be an asset at 1B.  League average OPS at 1B in 2015 was 791 and has averaged 779 over the past 5 years.  I'd be pretty surprised if he's above about 725 or so.  Best case IMO is he's someone who is a weak spot but doesn't completely kill us and allows us to fill a position for close to nothing so we can spend more elsewhere.  I'd prefer to aim much higher, but if we lose Davis it may be better to go cheap at 1B and hope to land a couple mid-range fish in the corner OF spots to make up for lost power.

I think this is the right move, and it will be easier for him to learn the position in Norfolk, but if he was a left handed hitter he would be on the roster.

Looks like Walker still raking to start the season. 4 HR already and a .633 slugging percentage. Hopefully he's looking good in LF!

Nice to see Walker doing well.

The problem is though, his skill set is secondary to what the team needs right now.

The need for a defensive outfielder who can take Trumbo's spot in the 8th or 9th inning is what is needed right now.

Preferably left handed and fast.    Xavier Avery or even Borbon fits the need.

Assigned to Braves AAA after posting a .189/.231/.351 slash line in 37 spring ABs.

I guess O's fans won't be regretting seeing him go anytime soon.

Didn't see how he got there, but he's in the Dbacks system now....not any more room at the ML level in AZ than ATL, but he's hammering the ball early in the PCL (> 1.000 OPS)
