I had him 5th last July, but I have had him pegged for the pen.  Agree with Coker, when you see Archer comps that is exciting.

Yeah, I was going to link to this.

I mean, honestly I'm shocked they didn't Bundy him and re-work all of his mechanics years ago. Is Rick Peterson still a thing? I feel like Peterson would've overhauled his mechanics a while back.

This could also just be an upper minors thing. The O's focus on improving TTTP in the upper minors and so maybe they've worked to streamline his mechanics to achieve that goal? IDK.

This is what I was getting at, but I was sitting in the car and couldn't really flesh out my thoughts.

If it's a Peterston thing, maybe the change was something Kline was hesitant about to begin with and finally came around over the past 2 or 3 offseasons. Maybe Dave Wallace noticed something last year and gave him some pointers and really wanted him to focus on it during the offseason. If so, it's pretty big for the player development argument.

Was he back at UVA and a coach suggested something? Did he start tinkering with it on his own?

WE NEED TO KNOW!

I could be wrong, but I thought the realistic projection for him coming out of the draft was a fringe starter/ solid bullpen arm. Archer would be huge.

Here's what I know:

  • Pitchers coming out of UVA typically have meh mechanics. So it's doubtful that anyone from UVA influenced this.
  • The O's did not like his mechanics.
  • A scout I talked to said that it's possible the O's decided him getting shelled in AA was the tipping point.

Here's what I don't know:

  • Where the changes came from within the org.

Anyone catch his inning today?  I'm currently watching Ubaldo's start to see how he looks.

Kiley McDaniel ‏@kileymcd  38s

Heard Orioles righty Branden Kline continued cooking with gas, was 94-98 mph in his inning in the big league game today.

A little surprised that Roch and everybody (minus those in Dunedin) didn't tweet about Kline's velocity.

Orioles RHP Branden Kline continued his spring training breakout last night working 95-98 w/an 85-90 mph slider in season debut for AA Bowie

I was going to go to Friday night's game since I just happened to be in Richmond while they were there, but weather was kinda gross, and I didn't feel like sitting through rain delays so far from home. If Kline was starting it may have swayed me...but then again, I'm sure I'll see him plenty this year.

Comment From jda

Speaking of Kline, sitting 94mph, touched 97 a few times, can't tell if the slider is really better but it sure seems to be fooling hitters more now. If the velocity holds steady for all of April and he keeps dominating AA, what FV/risk would you comfortably give him on May 1?

Kiley McDaniel

He's a 45+ FV right now (haven't edited the lists, but that's what he will be when I do), which is 143-200 overall. Could be 50 in another month.

I've tweeted like 15 times about him, so that may be the best place to get full background. 94-98, SL and CH both cons above avg now, SL is better of the two. Used to be 89-93 with fringy to average stuff, no cons and little command due to UVA delivery mess that he's moved past now, finally.

Figure that means he thinks Kline is a closer prospect? Maybe #5 starter?

That's a great question. I had him tagged for the BP without question before the season...now I'm wondering if he can't make it as a starter. That is a heck of a one two punch with that velocity and the SL. If the CH looks like it could be a 60 pitch, that's a good make up for a SP. Also a good power RP profile though...

Can't wait to go see him live.

I was thinking that sounded like an SP profile also but guys ranked #140-200 usually aren't starters which threw me off. But now that I think about it, McDaniel probably just wants to see Kline keep this up for a few months before ranking him any higher then that which is fair enough given where Kline was before.
