So I said for the draft this year I suspected Giolito would have to have TJ surgery, but I would take him, give it to him right away and get him back asap.

He threw 2 innings, lost velo and is on his way to see Yocum now.

Terrible news, but much better this happened as a National rather than as an amateur.

It's not really a big deal. Most teams (including the Nats) knew this was a probability. TJ recovery is so automatic these days it's not much of a risk for the right prospect.

You think having the TJ now and going to college, would've been fine in 3-4 years and worth the risk?

I think it was less risk to take a couple mil now and try to make the bigger money on his next contract because not playing this upcoming season for recovery and then getting back into form the following season means he wouldn't have much playing time before he is draft eligible again. Better to go with an ML team's surgery and recovery to make sure you come back safe.

I think he'll be good as new in 2 seasons and pitching in AA by 21. It's not going to slow him down as much as other people. If he hadn't been hurt, he'd have been top 4 no doubt in my mind.

Yocum is one of the top TJ guys in the world. They both can do either really, they are top of the food chain as far as orthos go.

It's funny hearing Nats fans implode and other fans laughing at them like they didn't know this was happening. They knew from the start, it was already partially torn. He will be one of the top 10 prospects in all of baseball in 2015, you heard it here first.

Agreed, Rizzo is picking top-ceiling vulnerable players in many cases. I'll file this one away to remind you when he's working at some car dealership.

1. I agree that the probability is that the kid comes back 100%

2. All the reports I read had the kid's camp calling this a strain, not a partial tear, so I'm not sure if they were misleading people or not. Either way, it's not a surprise that he needs TJ surgery and shouldn't be.

3. This probably shows why the kid was willing to sign for a lot less than what his camp was talking about. The whole college thing was a smoke screen.

4. I certainly wouldn't have taken on the risk where the O's were picking but it still makes sense for the Nationals even with the TJ surgery.

No team was going to give up draft picks. Under the old CBA, he probably wouldve goten significantly more. His choice was either, sign or risk what was on the table. Even if he had gone the JUCO route, I doubt he would've gotten a higher slot next year given the TJ. Just like every other case, it gives the kid leverage. If he just says he's going pro, he won't get as much. You saw this with Dylan Bundy when he *enrolled* in JUCO and said his chances were 50/50 of going to the O's. They weren't, he was just trying to get some extra bucks, he wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

I posted about this in the TOR thread.

It was NOT a PED it was a banned supplement (basically a caffeine like substance in over the counter stuff). It's one of those things that shouldn't be banned, but found it's way on lists after what happened with Bechler.
