@ESPNStatsInfo Madison Bumgarner becomes 7th pitcher to be named SI's Sportsman of the Year. 1st since Curt Schilling & Randy Johnson shared award in 2001.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that there isn't an obvious candidate this year, so OK.

What's the prerequisite to win? Why not Russell Wilson or Tim Duncan or Justin Williams?

(This is rhetorical. I really dont care. Good for him.)

Tim Howard was one option I saw.

Not that this award really means anything, and he did have a magically post-season, but he wasn't even the best pitcher in his own division. Or even the second best. Hell ,he wasn't even in the top 20 for pitchers in WAR. Not that whoever voted for this award is really interested in who led the league in WAR.

I feel like this pick is kind of like People magazine and their "sexiest alive" lists. SI picking someone people might have a conversation about, like this thread right here, more than an objective best pick.

How Is Madison Bumgarner Even A Real Person?

The bits coming out from the article are amazing.

It's been a pretty big honor in the past. Don't know if it's lost some of it's luster, as magazines are fading out in general, but I remember it being pretty prestigious in years past.

His postseason performance was worthy of enshrinement with such an award.
