Great articles. It'll be interesting to see how they play through the rest of July.
Or.....
You could just do the right thing and switch the channel to MASN!

Phil's got Miguel Gonzalez...6/48.
Just needs to be an average starter for that to be pretty good. If he's anything better than average, it will look like a steal.

If you got it spend it. Nice signing for them IMO.

ESPN: Jonathan Papelbon questions Phils
http://espn.go.com/m...weeping-changes
He must've forgotten that Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, and Chase Utley weren't getting any younger, but he wouldn't mind have Raul Ibanez back at this point.

Phils continue to be stupid.
That's one I didn't quite get. Take it the Phillies expect to be competitive, otherwise paying Utley that amount just seems dumb.

Amaro has basically backed himself into a corner where he HAS to take that view. He's pretty much throwing good money after bad, even if Utley ends up technically worth the contract (which he has a good chance to be, though I wouldn't put money on it).

What's the terms?
2/$27M
If he's healthy and only declining a bit, he can be worth that. Of course, that assumes he's healthy and only declining a bit
It also continues to push back the date for a Phillies rebuild, which is the real issue.

That's more than I saw earlier -- it was 2 years/$20 million, so yeah I'd say this is worse. Atleast they got Howard's contract left.

That's a perfectly good contract in terms of likely production. I agree about the rebuilding angle, but depending on Halladay and the Gonzalez, they could have really high ceiling for their rotation.

I don't think signing Utley to a 2 year contract is a step in the wrong direction. Over 3 years he has an 11.8 WAR despite injuries. What is hindering the Phillies more are the huge and underproducing contracts of Howard and Papelbon as well as hanging on to Rollins and Ruiz.
It is correct that Utley hasn't been the problem (other than his health). But this just shows a continued denial by the Phillies front office of the status of the franchise.

The Phils aren't good, have a poor farm system and have a lot of money allocated to aging players.
They need to rebuild.

From what my family members who live in Exton tell me they are trying to remain a winning team over the next few years in an attempt to land the next big TV contract. They are convinced they are the perfect fit since they are the biggest team on the East Coast and I guess their current contract runs out soon. They said that is why they won't rebuild.
