He's certainly not the first coach to do this, nor will he be the last.

No, but this certainly isn't the tipping point that finally reveals that Edsall is a judgemental asshole, either.  Call if confirmation bias if you want.

No love for Edsall. At all. But both sides lie to each other days leading up to the decision to decommit or pull scholarship offers. You can say the school/coach should be held to a higher standard but it's hard to demand that.

The whole process is beyond messed up. I was watching the UA All Star game for HS kids a week ago and a kid has a segment set aside for him to pick his school on air. So he picks the school hes committing to and then the commentator proceeds to ask him who else he's heard from and if he's got any other visits set up. He proceeds to list a few more schools. Seriously, WTF. So the whole thing was set up so a 17 yr old kid could be an attention whore on tv.

Yeah this whole verbal agreement crap and signing date stuff needs to go. If  school commits to a player, verbal or not, they need to be on the hook for this. You have to protect these 17 year old kids. Especially with the turmoil in coaching and turnover. You can't just have a guy get fired, a new guy come in, and then a 17 year old kid is the one that suffers. Having to carry the previous regime's scholarships should just be part of the deal. NFL teams don't get to dump contracts with no penalty cause the new coach doesn't like those players, it's bad enough people are making money off these kids who get to work for free.

Agreed with this part too though. Same as the school needs to be held to it, kids shouldn't be allowed to back out of deals either. There needs to be more commitment with these things. What are you teaching them when they can just "decommit" and go wherever someone comes up with a better offer?

Absolutely. It's just become so obvious that verbals mean nothing anymore. The kid has his moment to commit and the next question from the interviewer is so where is your next visit.

The only way to fix it is for everyone to stop paying attention to it.

Regarding Edsall, as usual, he handled a situation that often arises when a new coach takes over in the shittiest way possible by yanking the offer. Durkin, by accounts, was at least straightforward with with some of the holdover commits last year and told them that he doesn't really see them as getting playing time, but their scholarship offer still stood if they wanted it. Many moved on on their own. I'm sure this difference is one of the reasons Durkin is light years better than Edsall in recruiting.

These kids working for free is only if you don't consider the education worth anything.

It's probably close to $40k a year for an out of state kid to attend UConn, if not more. I'm sure there are plenty of kids who would love to play football in exchange for that bill.

Except if the kid gets injured playing football and the scholarship is revoked after the school year, then it's worth a lot less. Or if he just isn't good enough and it's revoked after the school year.

Then you have the kids that really don't want the college education, and probably couldn't get admitted if they couldn't play football....they just want a shot at going on to the NFL, and college is the only route. The classes and studying that come with that education are just a distraction to them, but the school goes along with it so they can win games, pack their stadium, and rake in TV money.

I do because the graduation rates for scholarship athletes are TERRIBLE. Most of them take general level classes with joke majors, or never end up declaring a major and then are off to try to make the pros.

Chris Wilcox comes to mind. It's not like most of them are ACTUALLY receiving an education, or a full one especially. I have so much respect for the guys that finish out early or come back later so that they can get their degree. It's just really nice to see them getting what they are actually supposed to get in that deal, especially considering the money these schools pull in because of them. The TV deals ALONE are insane.
